Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and Biotechnology

The Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and Biotechnology theme, or Bio for short, aims to fund research that builds towards a knowledge based bio-economy (KBBE). The idea behind the KBBE is to bring together all the relevant players to address social, environmental and economic challenges:

  • The growing demand for safer, healthier, higher quality food
  • Responding to the specific dietary needs of consumers
  • The increasing risk of food related disorders
  • Animal welfare
  • The increasing risk of epizootic and zoonotic diseases
  • Threats to the sustainability and security of agricultural, aquaculture and fisheries production
  • The sustainable use and production of renewable bio-resources

This theme has several activity areas, with each funding research, networking and research support activities. The areas available for research funding are:

Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments
Research to look into key long term drivers for sustainable production and management of biological resources (micro-organisms, plants and animals), and the exploitation of biodiversity.
Fork to farm: food (including seafood), health and well being
The focus here is to understand consumer behaviour and consumer preferences. This knowledge is key to understanding the competitiveness of the food industry, the impact of food on health and the well-being of the European citizen. Research will look more specifically at consumer attitude, cultural and societal trends, food choice and consumer access to food. It will also include development of food and nutritional research.
Life sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes
This activity covers research into improving crops, forest products, feed-stocks, marine products and biomass for energy and high value-added products. Also covers research into environmental biotechnology, such as cleaner processing and bio-remediation is identified.

Documents of Interest

Bio project database: 2007-2011 Defra have complied a database of FP7 projects from the Bio theme. Each project entry includes, where available, a hyperlink to the summary page on CORDIS and the project’s own website. The databases currently cover the 2007-09 calls for the Bio theme but will be updated on a regular basis when new information is released.

FP6 Food Project Results

The Food Standards Agency funded a project, Food Forward, to provide easy access to information on FP6 projects relevant, and of interest to its stakeholders. The project is now complete but the information is still available to anyone who is interested. To access further information about Food Forward, please click here.
